Victoria Park, London. Bank holiday. Sunset. Paul and James laying on the grass.

Paul: Do you think I ever cross her mind?

James: Of course you do.

Paul: What if I don’t?

James: You do. You were together for three years. She can’t forget you like that.

Paul: What’s your favorite food?

James: Steak.

Paul: Imagine having steak for three years in a row. It would be the last thing on your mind, right?

James: Are you comparing yourself to steak?

Paul: I’m juicy and delicious but no. You get the idea. What I’m saying is that what if she’s had enough of me? What if I’m steak in her mind?

James: Paul Leonard Williams, get your shit together. You are no steak. She might not be thinking about you every day but you definitely cross her mind.

Pause. Paul sits up in a yoga position. James rolls on the grass and lands on his right shoulder.

James: What about me? Do you think I ever cross her mind?

Paul: You know you do. She’s crazy about you.

James: Crazy? Yes. About me? Remains to be seen. Why isn’t she texting ?

Paul: Cause she’s playing hard to get Jamie! Come on! Don’t act like you don’t know how this game’s played.

James: Shall I text her? She hasn’t contacted me since Saturday.

Paul: No. Saturday was two days ago. Chill the fuck out. Let it marinate. Play it cool.

James: I just don’t get it. Why does it have to be so freaking hard? Why the guessing games? She likes me. I like her. Let’s just do this.

Paul: Ha! You’re talking about the oldest game ever invented my man. You think you can come in and change the rules just like that? I’d say enjoy it. If history is any proof, this might actually be the most fun you’ll ever have with her. Like dogs chasing cars. The chase is what the fuss is all about. Getting her is not all that much.

James: Stop talking nonsense. You and Katie had some fun times together. The trip to Paris? Setting up your studio? Even the shit times like when your gran passed. You just choose to forget. Not even forget, overlook. I get it, you’re hurt. That doesn’t take away from being in a relationship.”

Paul: Nice try. I’m still not letting you text her.

James: Fuck you. Sitting here trying to help you and you’re taking the piss.

Paul: If you wanna help me, get me to forget Katie instead of telling me how great she was. I know how great she was. That’s why I can’t forget her.

James: It’s going to come. Be patient and give it some more time.

Paul. Wow. Did you think that all by yourself? Time passes anyway you dumbass. It’s not like clocks stop. Doing nothing in the meantime doesn’t really sound like a great idea.

A buzz brings Paul’s phone to life. A few seconds later the same thing happens to James’ phone. The look up at each other in disbelief.

Clocks do stop after all.
